Here is a model that should be familiar to Sci-Fi fans. Yes, those of you who have watched Babylon 5 made in the mid-1990s would certainly recognize it, but also fans of “2010 The Year We Make Contact” from 1984 would also see that it’s pretty much a rip-off of the Alexei Leonov from that film.
Note that you can click on the pictures here to see larger versions.
The model measures roughly 15” long and is built from the crude “Warp” brand kit with parts mostly cast in resin with some parts in Photoetch brass and wire for the spindly antennae on the nose. It has a brass tube armature running its entire length to which the main parts are supported and the stand is made of MDF with acrylic rods plugged into the bottom using brass pins.
I usually photograph spaceship models against black velvet but in the case of this model, it is so dark it would almost get lost against a black background. White allowed for photography that better defines its detail.
The mastering of the kit is actually very good, but like most “garage kits”, the casting is not great. There were some air bubbles that needed to be filled and a tremendous amount of cleanup, mostly removing flash and putting seams, was required before assembly
The instructions were also particularly vague, and assembly was greatly helped by pictures of the studio CGI model used for the show itself (provided by my client who requested the build) were required to understand how much of it needed to go together. The model was sprayed with dark gray primer overall, weathered with a black wash, and highlighted with white dry brushing.
The client who requested this model has also requested that I build him a Star Fury fighter from the show, so stay tuned for that one. It will be a little while though as I have a few projects to do that must come first. ;-)
Enjoy!
Days that loved watching with my late father.
